Pathways of Practice
In the introduction of his book Lines: A Brief History, social anthropologist Tim lngold asks, what does weaving, walking, observing, singing, storytelling, drawing and writing have in common?
He suggests that they all proceed along lines of one kind or another - lines which are threads (in space), or traces (on a surface). He classifies threads as filaments and traces as marks that can be additive or reductive, where each can create surfaces of their own or dissolve them. There's something inherently "textile-y" in this thinking, and it is through this lens that the group exhibition Pathways of Practice takes shape.
The idea and curation for the show developed over a series of physical and digital studio visits, and the conversations that resulted are the basis for the following texts - making connections and putting words to the things you can and can't see in the exhibition. With their individual practices in ceramic, textile, stone and mixed media, the exhibiting artists' explore material processes, craft histories and personal narratives. Collectively, these new and recently made works take on distinct meanings, in relation to each other and in the context of HV Gallery.
In addition to the exhibition, a series of events invites the public to participate in workshops and talks, where the artists' practices open up further. Across these forms, we hope to engage in material conversations, giving insight and hands-on experience of where diverse working methods and wider associations intersect or diverge.
